just a blip on the radar

A blog of a survivor of anorexia. Hope for those still struggling, and my life after eating disorders.

It’s not true. :(
I see all these photos on tumblr about folks that think they aren’t attractive because they aren’t skinny enough and it breaks my heart—because I was that person. I still think that way sometimes. It destroys me to think that females—and males, too—are made to think these things. I honestly think that advertising is the main problem. Coupled with the high cost of eating “well”…it leads to disastrous proportions of people around the world that think so little of themselves.
I had to stop watching television when I was 16 because I realized it was slowly conditioning me into a state of low self-esteem where I always wanted more. The problem, though, is that I didn’t know what I wanted more of, only that I didn’t have whatever it was that the hole in my being needed. I’ve come to realize that that hole was my low self-esteem. That hole was the advertising telling me that no matter what I did that I was fat, that I was going to die from some disease that I couldn’t help but contract from living in this crazy world, and that I wasn’t ever going to be good enough—that I needed to watch this show or buy this product or get the “new thing.”
Now that I’m 26, I see our society in hyperdrive even moreso. And I hope for everyone’s well-being that they can tear themselves away from the TV, the advertisements, the product placement, the brainwashing. I hope some of us can save ourselves.
